I recently discovered this very thing that my new Google Project Fi Moto x4 is clearly still connecting to towers and communicating mined data - I called Google's Project Fi support and the support person emphatically stated that "No, your phone does Not communicate at all when in Airplane mode" - I called because I noticed that even in Airplane mode my butt was hurting after a few minutes of the phone being in my back pocket. I had made a nice, special teflon coated aluminum foil liner sewn into a leather wallet made for the phone to help reduce the phone's impact on my body, which, BTW, is 5G capable which also means a 1000 folder greater impact on my body when my phone comms in 5G mode... Yikes! Tracking & data mining aside for a moment, my greatest concern is this technology's huge toxicity - My hope is that the nice leather envelope will also reduce the phone's telemetry data collection and delivery but I rather doubt it...
