I have known about this for a number of years and have some research - I found a Geologist in India that also suspected this and did a good deal of research that showed very strong evidence that this Plane of Existence at one time was entirely made of silica, NOT carbon - thus the fact that Earth has more silica many, many times that of any other mineral - the crystals you love may Very well be the remnant a life form so huge that it would boggle your mind - Imagine trees as tall as Mount Everest - No kidding! Please pardon the Biblical references but they are pertinant...
